Case Study
AKT: Life Saving Technology for Warfighters
When blood supply and resources are limited, you need to know who to give it to first. AKT empowers in-field operators to make pre-hospital decisions using real-time coagulopathy monitoring.

The Idea
Enhance care at the point of injury & reduce time to hemorrhagic control. Design and build a complex workflow for single-patient, multi-time point measurements with QR code chip identification.
The Problem
Coagulopathy of Trauma is a hypo-coagulable state with increased bleeding, heightened resuscitation requirements, and a 4X increase in mortality. To minimize warfighter mortality, coagulopathy must be assessed nearest the point of injury.
Solution & Design Approach
- A product designed for Real-Time Coagulopathy Monitoring (RTCM) using an Android smartphone.
- Blood sample results in under 2 minutes at the point of injury.
- Informs interventions to reduce morbidity with bold, visually prominent status indicators.
In Practice

What We Learned
- →Needs to support battlefield resuscitation for immediate stabilization of combat casualties.
- →Needs to "AKT" fast, and "Always Keep Track" of injured warfighters.
- →AKT reading needs to take less than 2 minutes and alert medical team to take immediate action.
- →Status of warfighter must be bold, and visually prominent and each status must be very distinguishable.
